Character Collaborations

A familiar character in a new setting.

Character collaborations in Japan are projects that bring a recognisable fictional character together with another brand, creator, institution or service. The result might be merchandise, an exhibition, a transport design or an event. The everyday abbreviation korabo comes from collaboration, but the word does not describe one standard business arrangement. A licensed product, an artistic interpretation and a promotional partnership have different purposes. Sanrio provides well-documented examples, while museum exhibitions show how character imagery acquires meanings across generations and places. Reading a collaboration carefully means identifying the partners, what they produced, when it appeared and how the character’s identity was adapted.

01

A familiar character enters a different setting

A collaboration combines recognisable identities in a specific project. It can connect a character with a railway service, an event mascot or a designer’s work. The label alone does not reveal who initiated the project, which organisation produced an object or how long the arrangement lasted.

02

The format changes what the partnership does

Sanrio distinguishes licensing, retail, digital services and theme-park activity in its business descriptions. Collaborations can operate across these areas, but the resulting experiences differ.

Merchandise
A character appears on a product or in a combined design.
Service
Character imagery becomes part of a journey or other experience.
Exhibition
Objects and interpretations place the character in a curatorial setting.
Event
A time-bounded programme brings characters and audiences together.

03

A railway project can connect character and place

JR West announced the Hello Kitty Shinkansen’s launch for 30 June 2018. The project connected a familiar character with a train service and regional presentation. The photograph here records the train in 2019; it is a historical example rather than a claim that the pictured service is currently operating.

04

An event mascot can meet another character family

In July 2024, the Expo 2025 association announced official collaboration products combining Myaku-Myaku with Hello Kitty and other Sanrio characters. Its announcement identifies the organisers and sales launch. Those details distinguish a documented official project from an unattributed image or a later resale listing.

05

Museums examine the meanings carried by characters

The Japanese American National Museum’s 2014–15 Hello Kitty exhibition brought historical objects and artistic interpretations together. Its curatorial framing treated the character as a subject of cultural history as well as commercial design. An exhibition can therefore provide context for understanding why a familiar image travels between different settings.

06

Identify the project before interpreting the design

Read the announcement, product credit and date together. A copyright credit, brand logo and manufacturer name describe different relationships. The collaboration’s existence does not mean the character has permanently changed identity, that the partners have merged, or that every similarly themed object belongs to the same authorised project.

07

Follow one character world across media

Chiikawa offers a useful example of the distinctions between an original manga, its animated adaptation and licensed collaborations, including the time-limited Hankyu Railway project.
