Give Matsushima an indoor architectural anchor.
Zuiganji’s temple buildings offer a quieter counterpoint to the bayfront. Make the paid visitor route the main stop, then continue to nearby Entsuin for a different relationship between buildings and garden.

Use the seasonal closing time
Hours vary month by month: the temple stays open later in summer than in winter. The adult fee changed to ¥1,000 in April 2026, so older ¥700 guides are out of date. Arrive with enough time to follow the complete visitor route.
Keep the neighbouring temple separate
Entsuin has its own admission and opening calendar. A visit to one does not include the other, and seasonal evening illuminations are distinct programmes. Leave a waterfront or food break after the temple visits, with a cruise optional rather than compulsory.
