Look beyond the pagoda
The red pagoda is easy to notice, but the temple also connects to the Kuroda family and the history of Buddhism in Hakata. Check which halls are accessible that day. Follow the temple’s rules for photographs inside; an exterior image does not imply permission to photograph the Buddha hall.
A good first stop from Gion
Visit while the halls are open, then walk toward the Machiya museum and Kushida Shrine. Leave the shopping arcade until later if needed. Travellers who find stairs difficult should confirm the route to the specific hall they want to see before setting out.
