Fukuoka · Hakata Old Town

Meet Hakata through its guardian shrine.

A shrine visit gives the surrounding shopping streets a different context. Kushida is closely tied to Hakata Gion Yamakasa, but an ordinary visit is about the precinct, its buildings and the people who continue to worship here.

Start with the precinct

Pause at the shrine before turning the visit into a photograph stop. Keep approaches clear and follow signs around ceremonies. The annual festival and its crowds are a different experience from a normal weekday; do not expect a procession during an ordinary visit.

Continue into the old town

The Machiya museum offers context for local crafts and everyday life. Kawabata then provides a place to browse and eat. This compact pairing is useful when you have only a few hours in Hakata and want more than a station-area shopping visit.
