A hall that rewards a sustained look.

Rows of Kannon figures make Sanjusangendo a striking indoor temple visit. Give the sculpture time: the scale of the hall is immediately impressive, while the differences between figures emerge more slowly.

Let your eyes adjust

The temple is known for its 1,001 Kannon statues. Move at a considerate pace and focus on the figures rather than trying to document the interior. Photography is not allowed inside the hall; the photograph above shows the exterior.

An early finish in winter

From 16 November the last admission is 15:30. If combining this visit with Kawai Kanjiro House and Kenninji, work backwards from that cutoff and leave room for the walks between them. Check the temple’s current notices before travelling.
