An artist’s life, room by room.

The former home and workplace of ceramic artist Kawai Kanjiro makes craft feel closely connected to everyday living. Furniture, objects and working spaces reward a slower look than a conventional gallery checklist.

Look at the house as a whole

Kawai designed the home in 1937. The preserved domestic spaces, studio and climbing kiln show how living and making shared the same setting. Pay attention to the furniture and collected objects as well as the ceramics: the museum’s interest lies in their relationships.

Plan around a small historic building

Allow time for the house’s circulation and follow the on-site rules. Confirm access arrangements directly if steps are difficult. Seasonal closure dates vary; the Kyoto Tourism Federation lists the current general schedule and the museum’s contact number.
