The gates are the beginning of the walk.
Fushimi Inari’s torii-lined paths belong to a living shrine and a sacred mountain. Decide whether you are making a short visit to the lower precinct or setting aside time for a longer climb.

Look beyond a single photograph
The torii paths are only part of the precinct. Smaller shrines and worship sites continue up Inariyama, a 233-metre sacred mountain. Keep paths clear for worshippers and other visitors, and choose your turning point according to time and energy.
Plan the climb separately
A full mountain walk is not the same as a quick look at the lower gates. Wear shoes suited to steps, carry what you need and check current shrine notices. If adding the Gekkeikan museum later, allow a separate train journey and reserve the museum before committing to a long climb.
