Walk a post town that remains a living village.
Thatched buildings line the former route through Ouchi-juku, where shops and homes share the same spaces. Explore the street slowly, choose a meal or small purchase, and remember that preservation here is part of residents’ everyday work.

Look without entering private space
The streetscape is maintained by people who live and work here. Use open shops for an interior visit and respect household boundaries. Thatched roofs require continuing maintenance; the value of the visit includes understanding that work rather than seeing the village as a fixed historical set.
Plan the return before lunch
The association publishes monthly business calendars because shops do not all keep the same days. Check the place you want to eat and your onward transport before lingering. This is outside Aizuwakamatsu; winter road conditions can make a tightly packed castle-and-village schedule impractical.
