Kenninji gives a Gion walk a more reflective centre, with temple architecture and garden views to spend time with. Separate a walk through the precinct from a visit to the paid buildings so you know what you are planning to see.

Choose the paid temple visit

The interior route and garden views are the reason to allow more than a quick precinct walk. Follow the current route and photography instructions on site; worship and ceremonies can affect access. The photograph shows the historic Chokushimon gate.

The temple has announced an adult admission increase to ¥1,000 from 1 January 2027. Special closures are also published on its website, including 15 November 2026. Build a little flexibility into a Gion afternoon instead of treating the temple as open without exception.
