Step into a former courthouse.
Red brick, formal interiors and the central staircase make the City Archives an appealing stop for architecture-minded visitors. Built as a courthouse in 1922, it now offers a way to look at the city’s public history inside the building itself.

Look beyond the staircase
The stained glass is an obvious draw, but the restored meeting room and courtroom help explain the building’s former purpose. Follow the day’s visitor route and room-access notices. This remains an archives institution, so keep voices and photography considerate.
Use it to begin the Cultural Path
Continue toward Shumokukan and Futaba for a contrast between public and domestic architecture. The Archives opens earlier than the house museums, which makes it a useful first stop. Check the extra monthly Thursday closure as well as the common Monday closure.
