Look beyond the gate into a household’s material world.
Aoyagi’s grounds and several collections make a substantial stop in Kakunodate’s samurai district. Take time with everyday objects and the arrangement of buildings instead of walking past the gate on the way to another photo.

Allow for several collections
The estate includes multiple exhibition buildings rather than a single room. Choose a few themes that interest you and look at how objects relate to domestic and working life. Ask staff about any activity before assuming hands-on participation is included in admission.
Pair the house with a craft visit
The nearby kabazaiku museum connects the district with cherry-bark craft. Leave time for the street between the two, whose trees and walls change with the seasons. The photograph shows the gate in November 2016; it does not predict this year’s foliage.
