Tohoku · Iwate / Morioka
Find the stories behind a castle-town walk.
Festival displays and the history of the Morioka domain provide a useful introduction to the streets outside. Begin with the free ground floor, then choose the paid upstairs galleries for a more substantial visit.
- April–October
- 09:00–19:00
- November–March
- 09:00–18:00
- Upstairs last entry
- 30 minutes before closing
- Admission
- Ground floor free; upstairs adult ¥450
- Closed
- Third Tuesday with exceptions; 31 Dec–1 Jan
- Suggested time
- 60–90 minutes
Choose the two floors deliberately
The first floor introduces local festivals and visitor information; the second explores the domain’s history and the Nanbu family’s objects. Allow time for the interpretation instead of treating the building as a quick tourist-information stop. Changing displays give repeat visits a different focus.
Take the context back outside
Continue into the castle-ruins park or toward the red-brick bank after the galleries. This is a compact central-Morioka combination, unlike Chuson-ji in Hiraizumi, which requires a separate journey. Check the calendar’s occasional exceptions before using the museum as your day’s anchor.
