A garden designed around water and distant hills.

Murin-an offers a more focused garden visit than a large temple circuit. Notice how water, open lawn and the Higashiyama backdrop work together, then slow down enough to see the composition change as you move.

Book the garden before the rest

Entry is managed in hourly slots. Reservations open 30 days ahead and close at 15:00 the previous day; limited walk-in places may be available. Arrive for your booked time rather than treating the reservation as an open-ended ticket.

Understand what the ticket covers

The standard visit includes the garden, the main house’s first floor and the Western-style building. Other rooms and programmes have separate arrangements. The garden is associated with Yamagata Aritomo and gardener Ogawa Jihei; look for the relationship between canal-fed water and borrowed mountain scenery.
