Ryogoku

Meet Hokusai in his home district.

A striking museum in Ryogoku connects Hokusai’s art with the Sumida neighbourhood. Its angular architecture makes an immediate impression; inside, choose between an introduction to the artist and the changing exhibition programme.

The Education Room—Discover Hokusai—uses full-size, high-definition replicas and interactive displays. Original works appear in changing exhibitions: check the programme rather than assuming a famous print is always on view.

Take a slower look

Compare the building’s reflective exterior with the detailed lines of the prints. The museum works well as the main stop of a Ryogoku afternoon, with the riverfront as a separate outdoor extension.
