Ueno Park

Gold and carved detail in Ueno Park.

A lantern-lined approach leads to a richly decorated shrine associated with Tokugawa Ieyasu. Slow down at the gate and enclosure: the appeal is in the carved animals, colour and gold leaf.

Choose the right visit

The paid route brings you inside the surrounding wall to inspect the building from outside. It does not admit visitors into the main hall. The present shrine building dates to 1651.

Check seasonal extras separately

The peony garden has seasonal openings and separate ticket arrangements. Bring cash and consult the current admission notice if combining areas. This is a compact stop to pair with a museum or the children’s literature library.
