Read Kyoto through art, history and a former bank.

The Museum of Kyoto brings the city’s history and culture into focus, with changing exhibitions and a distinctive red-brick annex. It works particularly well as an introduction before exploring the central shopping streets.

Two buildings, several kinds of visit

The annex occupies the former Bank of Japan Kyoto branch. In the main museum, exhibitions and a film programme offer different ways into the city’s culture. Check the programme first; a film screening is a timed activity, not a continuous display.

A useful central anchor

Pair one exhibition with Inoda Coffee and a later browse at Nishiki Market. The museum’s website currently carries a maintenance notice but states that the museum is operating normally; use its current notices for exhibition hours and holiday changes.
