Kyoto · Northern Arashiyama

Start above Arashiyama and walk down.

Expressive stone figures make this hillside temple a distinctive stop beyond the central Arashiyama streets. Give it a dedicated part of the day; it is farther from the station than a quick glance at a map may suggest.

Notice the individual expressions

The appeal is in looking from one stone figure to the next. Allow room for other visitors on the paths and follow the temple’s route. This is Otagi Nenbutsuji, a different temple from nearby Adashino Nenbutsuji; use the full name when arranging transport.

Make the journey part of the plan

The temple recommends arriving by taxi or bus, then walking downhill through Saga-Toriimoto toward the main Arashiyama area. Check the bus timetable in advance. The Wednesday and Saturday closures matter more than an early start if you are choosing which day to visit.
