Kagurazaka

A contemporary shrine in a historic neighbourhood.

Akagi Shrine offers a thoughtful pause near the top of Kagurazaka’s shopping streets. Its renewed precinct combines worship with neighbourhood life, including a café and occasional market events.

Visit as part of a slower walk

The precinct’s renewal was completed in 2010. Pair a short visit with time in Kagurazaka rather than making the shrine an isolated stop. Market events are occasional, so do not plan around stalls without checking the date.

Respect the photography boundaries

Personal snapshots are generally possible, but photography inside the shrine buildings and posing with your back to the sanctuary directly in front of it are restricted. Professional or revenue-generating shoots require permission. Give worshippers space.
