Shinjuku

A shrine woven into central Shinjuku.

Hanazono Shrine adds a different rhythm to the streets east of Shinjuku Station. Make a short visit before continuing to shops or an evening meal, and leave room for people who come here to worship.

See the shrine in its neighbourhood

The shrine has long served the Shinjuku community. Its history also connects with theatrical performances used to raise rebuilding funds after fires. Look for the contrast between the precinct and the surrounding commercial streets.

Keep festival expectations separate

Large annual celebrations transform the grounds, but they are not an everyday attraction. Check current event dates if that is your reason for visiting; a normal day works better for a brief, unhurried stop.
